IRON INFUSION
Iron is an essential mineral your body needs to produce hemoglobin—the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Iron deficiency anemia is common among women due to blood loss from menstruation, as well as among vegans, vegetarians, and athletes.
Without enough iron, your body can’t function properly, leading to iron deficiency anemia with symptoms like:
- Fatigue and weakness
- Shortness of breath
- Pale skin
- Hair loss
- Cold hands and feet
What Is an Iron Infusion?
An iron infusion delivers iron directly into your bloodstream, quickly restoring your iron levels. This method is especially beneficial if oral supplements are not effective or tolerated.
Who Can Benefit?
- Individuals who struggle to absorb iron from oral supplements
- Those with iron deficiency anemia who need a faster recovery than oral iron can provide – for example, if your ferritin levels are below 15 µg/l.
- Athletes aiming for optimal ferritin levels – for men, this is 150-200 µg/l, and for women, 100-150 µg/l.
- Women with frequent blood loss due to menstruation – iron deficiency anemia is common among women.
- Vegans and vegetarians – plant-based diets often lack sufficient iron.
- Male athletes – intense training can lead to iron depletion, even in men.
How Many Iron Infusions Do I Need?
A general rule of thumb is that 100 mg of iron per infusion increases ferritin by approximately 12.5 µg/l.
To correct iron deficiency when ferritin levels are around 10-20 µg/l, you typically need 4 infusions of 200 mg iron (FerMed, iron(III) sucrose).
A structured approach to improving iron levels:
- 2 infusions per week for 2 weeks (total 800 mg iron)
- This ensures a gradual and well-tolerated iron replenishment
